Urdu literature is one of the modern literatures of the world. In the beginning, the prose literature of this language was confined only to allegorical fiction dealing with love. But when the sepoy mutiny took place in the Indian subcontinent, a new awakening began. As a result of this renaissance, Urdu prose literature has changed drastically and focused on every field of society. In particular, the education and reformist movement of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan led to the growth of Urdu prose fiction and the emergence of realistic society and life-based creative prose fiction. Drama is one of the most popular forms of literature in prose. It is of various types, such as stage plays, TV dramas, literary plays, radio plays etc. At one time, Urdu stage drama was very popular in many cities of the Indian subcontinent and it significantly influenced the society. But with the evolution of time and the advent of the film industry, both its popularity and influence are declining. This paper discusses the origin, growth and decline of Urdu stage drama
