Abstract

The aim of this article is to show the origin of the feminist movement in India, and in this context, reveal the nature of multifaceted briliancies of Begum Rokeya. Feminist thought arose in this subcontinent under the influence of the west. Its development in the Muslim society was much delayed compared to the Hindu society. Rokeya was the pioneer of women’s awakening in Muslim society. She recognized education as a way of women’s self development. Rokeya procured to improve the status of Muslim women in society by writing literature and taking part in social activities. Her educational and social thoughts are manifested in her writings and life. In many other fields the radiance of her thought is diffused, but only these two aspects are highlighted here.
