Abstract

A writer usually presents his dream or vision of life in a piece of writing. The playwrights or the novelists weave dreams around the realities they are exposed to and these find expressions in their writings. But whether their visions are authentically and realistically portrayed in the plot and through the characters, incidents or episodes in their writings needs an examination. Tiner Tolowar is an artistic representation of the dream of Utpal Dutt's theatre and about the breaking of the dreams into an agonized realization of the reality that shatters his dreams. In the Tiner Tolowar the battle that unfolds in the theatre is a unique myth of how many dreams were woven but not fulfilled. The play shows how the theatre that has given a new person the honour, identity, and courage to dream ultimately has thrown him into the depth of despair over time, and in that humility, he has taken a new vow to fulfill his dream again. In such a way, the play dramatizes the recurrent pattern of dream, loss of dream and, having new dreams in life. This paper presents the picture of such struggle by some characters in Tiner Tolowar by famous plalywright and actor Utpal Dutt.
