Abstract

Dr. Mohammad Iqbal was a great Persian and Urdu poet, scholar, thinker and philosopher of the 19th and 20th centuries. Allamah Iqbal attempted to rouse the Muslims to a new sense of their destiny through his writings Dr. Mohammad Iqbal wrote many books in Persian, Urdu and English, like Payame Mashriq, Javid Nameh, Asrare khudi, Ramuz-e bekhudi, Jabure Azam, Musafire, Banggedara, Balezibril, Zarbe kalim, Ilmul Iqtisad, The Development of Metaphysics in Persia, The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam etc. His Payame Mashriq written in response to Goethe's West-Ostriches Divan affirmed the universality of Islam. Javid Nameh is considered Iqbal's masterpiece. Its theme, reminiscent of Dante's Divine Comedy, shows the ascent of the poet. It is his poems which made him known throughout the world. His philosophical Position was articulated in the reconstruction of religious thought in Islam. Philosophy of love is a very important aspect of his poems. This paper discusses those aspects of his writings in some detail.
