Abstract

Langal, a weekly magazine edited by Kazi Nazrul Islam, played a pivotal role in the early communist movement in Bengal. Established in 1925 as the mouthpiece of the Labour Swaraj Party, Langal was the first publication in undivided Bengal to promote communist ideology openly. It became a powerful platform for advocating workers' and peasants' rights, social justice, and anti-colonial resistance. This paper examines Langal's contributions to Bengal’s leftist politics, analyzing its key publications, editorial stance, and impact on the growing communist movement. The magazine published translations of Marxist literature, discussions on class struggle, and critiques of British imperialism. Through Langal, communist ideals reached a broader audience, influencing political discourse and mobilizing the working class. By tracing the magazine’s history, this study highlights its significance as an intellectual and ideological force in shaping Bengal’s early communist movement.
